It was rough, tense and bad, as it should have been. All that said, as the above-mentioned 1 guy, make sure that you take someone who will be able to pull something away from the movie and add to a discussion of it.

It's really easy to get caught up with Perry's seeming "these ninjas ain't shit" mentality, but I imagine that's largely a function of his upbringing and personal experience; while I don't know anything about it, I can surmise its character by the treatment of black men in his films. Basically, make sure he can see past the what to the why, or he's not going to be able to contribute anything meaningful.

All that having been said... the best thing to come out of seeing this movie was an overpowering desire to read the literary adaptation and see the play.Orgahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15212604700913262568noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5907788645425948477.post-77890043443063781602010-11-16T08:25:28.236-05:002010-11-16T08:25:28.236-05:00WOW! Well, I know about the infanticide (sp?) and don't trust TP to handle it in a fashion that honors the horror appropriately because of his history of recklessness with child abuse and sexual assault in his other less heavy films.DMLhttp://www.facebook.com/#!/profile.php?id=1555726204noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5907788645425948477.post-30896187866602736452010-11-15T20:33:18.755-05:002010-11-15T20:33:18.755-05:00I was out of town when I received the invite to th...I was out of town when I received the invite to the Atlanta premiere and so I was naturally disappointed to have missed it. However after reading all the mixed reviews, I think I should read the book first and watch the movie in "mixed" company as Ms. Sunshine suggest:)Alicia aka "Fashiona"https://www.blogger.com/profile/15784493153950706446noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5907788645425948477.post-11581178958302396432010-11-15T19:48:00.454-05:002010-11-15T19:48:00.454-05:00DML:

(yeah I said it) I completely forgot that he was responsible for Daddy's Little Girls too. Another of his flicks I've seen once it hit cable & had NOTHING else to do. Ooooh, it was laborious. Good Lawdt!! It was really painful to watch Idris Elba waste his talent tryna do a brotha a solid.

Tres. I'm believer in reading books first too, when it comes to our stuff. I think I actually may have read the Pelican Brief, & I did read The Da Vinci Code too, as well as ALL the Harry Potters (some others too but you get where I'm going). I appreciate a person who'll get a little back history first & be clear about what they're viewing. I would also encourage you to, should you catch wind of it, check it out on stage.

Fo'. You're right. As a pregnant woman, walking the thin cervical line to delivery, THIS movie is NOT 1 you need to see right now. I'll skip telling you why, though you may have heard by now.Ndygo Sunshynehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08821060076647560046noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5907788645425948477.post-68726281391901520932010-11-15T19:37:50.127-05:002010-11-15T19:37:50.127-05:00Hey, I haven't even seen the film but bascical...Hey, I haven't even seen the film but bascically deduced as much from the various accounts floating along these interwebs as you call them. One reason that I haven't seen the movie is that I believe that @ 9 months pregnant, I should not willingly subject myself to anything designed to create a major emotional outpour. Shoot, the season finale of MTV's "Teen Mom" had me in a virtual puddle, so I had to pass on that account alone. Also, I am a firm believer of reading the work that a film is based on before I actually see the movie. I ridiculously did not see "Malcolm X" until 2 years after it's release because I wanted to read the autobiography first. So, I plan on adding Ms. Shange's work to the my maternal sequester reading list and then catching the movie in the privacy of my own living room.
Lastly, thank you for pointing out T Pain's issues w/men that lead him to either portray black me as saints or horrendous fiends. There is no room left in his work for a 3 dimensional male character to exist. And when he attempted to round out a real man, not a caricature (Daddy's Little Girls) it was awkward, simplistic and overwrought.DMLhttp://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1555726204&ref=tsnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5907788645425948477.post-22328574109531422582010-11-15T18:45:30.104-05:002010-11-15T18:45:30.104-05:00no less original than your own take, lady. i love...no less original than your own take, lady. i loved the uniquely different take that lead to the same opinion more or less. that's the beauty of words. we all wield them differently.Ndygo Sunshynehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08821060076647560046noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5907788645425948477.post-32858336511921325382010-11-15T18:35:31.236-05:002010-11-15T18:35:31.236-05:00You always put such an original touch on things.
